Lost pet checklist for India: what to do in the first 24 hours
When a pet goes missing, the first day matters most. Most pets are found close to home, and quick action makes a real difference. Use this checklist and share it with your family so everyone acts at once.
Right away
- Search the immediate area calmly: under cars, in staircases, parking areas and gardens. Frightened pets often hide nearby.
- Bring their favourite treat or squeaky toy and call softly instead of shouting.
- Ask the guard, neighbours, delivery staff and shopkeepers if they have seen your pet.
Within a few hours
- Post a clear recent photo with your pet's name, breed, colour and where it was last seen in society and neighbourhood WhatsApp or Facebook groups.
- Call or visit nearby vets, groomers, pet shops and animal shelters and leave your contact details.
- Put up simple posters at junctions, gates and shops with one clear photo and a way to reach you.
Keep the search going
- Leave a familiar item, such as bedding, outside your home. Pets can follow scent back.
- Check again early morning and late evening, when streets are quieter.
- Update your posts each day so they stay visible.
Make it easier for a finder to reach you
Many finders want to help but do not know whom to call. A collar tag with your phone number on it works, but anyone can see and copy the number. A QR tag lets the finder scan and message or call you straight away, while your number stays private. Keep the pet's photo and details up to date so a finder can confirm it is the right animal.
Prevention beats a search
Keep a collar and tag on at all times, even indoors. Keep several recent photos on your phone. Consider a microchip as well, and make sure its details are current.
