Lost a bag, laptop or keys? What to do in the first hour

Valuables go missing in cabs, cafes, airports and offices. The first hour decides most outcomes.

Right away

• Retrace your steps and check the last place you remember having it.
• Call the cab driver, cafe, security desk or airport lost-and-found.
• Mark the device as lost in its tracking app if you have one.

Then

• Report it to the venue's helpdesk and leave your contact details.
• If it holds cards or important documents, inform your bank and issuer.
• File a report if it is valuable or contains ID.

Make it easier for a finder

A finder may want to help but have no way to reach you. A QR tag on your bag, laptop or keys lets them scan and call or message you without seeing your number. Add one before you travel.
