A car is blocking yours: what to do, step by step
Being blocked in is frustrating, especially when you are late. The fastest way out is almost always to reach the owner, not to argue or damage anything. Here is a calm order of steps that works in most Indian parking lots, streets and housing societies.
1. Look for a way to contact the owner
Check the windscreen and dashboard for a note, a phone number or a QR sticker. If there is a QR sticker, scanning it lets you message or call the owner without needing their number.
2. Ask the people nearby
- Ask the security guard or parking attendant; they often know which flat or shop the car belongs to.
- In a society, post the car number in the residents' group or ask the guard to announce it.
- In a market or mall, ask the nearest shopkeepers or the parking desk.
3. Wait a few minutes before escalating
Most owners return within minutes. Honking repeatedly rarely helps and can annoy the people who could help you. If you truly cannot wait, tell the guard or building management and let them handle it.
4. Never damage the car or let the air out of tyres
It can turn a small delay into a legal and financial problem. Take a photo of the situation and the number plate instead, which helps if you need to complain later.
5. Call for help only if it is dangerous or blocking an emergency
If a car is blocking an ambulance route or creating a safety risk, call the emergency number 112 or the local traffic police.
How to avoid this when you are the one parking
Put a QR sticker on your windscreen. Anyone you block can scan it and reach you immediately, and your phone number stays private. It is also useful if someone notices a problem with your parked car, such as lights left on or a flat tyre.
